Talking To Spirit

Ch.9 Diet & exercise for psychic development and spiritual growth

The other day, I was discussing this book across balconies with my neighbor in Provincetown. He asked what section I was working on. "Diet & exercise", I replied. He wanted to know how I was working diet and exercise into a book on spiritualism. I told him that I felt impelled to write about diet and exercise, because mediumship has had such a profound effect on my own diet and exercise.

Finding the balance of diet

A few months after becoming a professional reader, my ability to eat meat ended. How strange this was, because I grew up hunting, trapping, and, on many occasions, killing and preparing my own dinner. I never enjoyed killing, but was raised to believe it was necessary. I always ate my steak rare, actually what's called 'blue:' browned on each side, just enough for it to be warm in the middle. This is what 'Big,' a friend of mine, referred to as "still moo-ing."

The purchasing of red meat ended very abruptly at the supermarket. I picked up a steak; I felt pain; I put it down. I picked it up again; felt pain; put it down. I had a salad that night and wondered what I was going to do. I went to KFC for a chicken finger wrap; what had been a comfort food treat, was NOW disgusting. I accepted my fate. I became one of those people I quietly felt sorry for, I was a vegetarian. It got worse, within a year I was wearing Birkenstocks.

It took about three months before I completely stopped eating animal flesh. But from that moment in the supermarket, I knew my days were numbered. My deal with Spirit: I wouldn't eat any flesh that I wouldn't kill and prepare myself. I ate a little chicken, thinking I could kill one of those, and still ate fish. Eventually boiled eggs, fish, and chicken all tasted dirty. I realized I could no more kill a chicken or a fish than I could kill my own dogs. Meat was meat and, with the right sauce, it all tastes like chicken. I had changed and my consciousness finally caught up with my actions.

During this dietary transition period, I took a personal-power training course. There, I was directed to eat lots of protein to keep my energy up during the training, which would take a lot out of me. I found just the opposite to be true. Heavy meals made me tired, cranky, confused, and even egotistical. The husband and wife team teaching this technique were both obese; I quickly learned that if I did what they did, I would soon have what they had: FAT.

Researching the Internet for macro-biotic websites and referencing my 101 college biology class, I discovered that 70% of our energy comes from complex carbohydrates—not from protein. Protein is for building lean muscle mass, not energy. The human body needs 500 calories a day from complex carbohydrates just for the brain to function normally. Complex carbohydrates and proteins are naturally found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts. If you eat a variety of complex carbohydrates, your body can also assemble them into additional protein chains. Soybeans are composed of 37% protein, while beef is only 29%. Ounce for ounce, wheat grass has more protein than meat. So, a high protein diet is easier to obtain from eating vegetation, not animals. Please be proactive in researching your own nutritional needs & requirements.

I'm running through some of the basics of nutrition because even the Dead Sea scrolls talk about fasting, using meat from nuts not animals, and periods of internal cleansing in the quest for spiritual attainment. Fasting and cleanses are quite common in vision quests and the search for Spirit in many cultures and traditions through out history. Many people in todays society have reported to me that the practice of fasting and cleansing has given them great results.

Most people who seriously study mediumship will have dietary shifts to one degree or another. Some will become complete vegans others will just make better dietary choices. Whether you're a vegan or a carnivore isn't the point. The point is that cleaning up my own diet has helped me in obtaining deeper connection to the spirit world. I couldn't write a book on mediumship and not discuss it. Your diet like everything else is between you and the divine, just be conscious and aware and listen to your body and your guides.

Hydration

Water, "drink plenty, and lots." Cold water is great to cool you down but it does little to hydrate you.

In my late twenties my fight for hydration was my own fight with my belief system. I always drank lots of water all my life including seltzer water. I spent years fighting with people about how seltzer was just water with bubbles and cold water was king! I was always partially dehydrated, flaking skin, chapped hands. I stopped drinking cold and carbonated water, and began drinking room temperature water. Now I don't experience chapped hands and very rarely get chapped lips. When I gave up the fight and just drank plain old-fashioned room temperature filtered or bottled water I noticed great improvement within a few days.

During hot desert summer days of 120 degrees, I still like ice water. I just make sure I drink twice as much and when the sun goes down I switch to room temperature water.

During spiritual communication and spirit visits you may notice yourself getting parched and the houseplants drooping. Make sure you water everything in the house that needs water 24 hours before circle, including you. Fill the fish tank and water fountains, water the plants and pets, keep water handy for yourself and guests.

Water helps the energy flow, it's a natural conductor for electricity.

**I suggest filtered or bottled water because I can't stand the taste of the chlorine and fluoride in municipal water. If I can't stand the taste I won't drink it. It can't hydrate me if it's in the glass.
