Whenever I teach classes, people ask me how I got to be a good reader. I got to be a good reader by doing readings. The more I read, the better I got; and the better I got, the more readings I did. It was an affirmation in process. you want to be a good swimmer, then, you need to swim, and you want be a good reader, then, you need to do readings.
Every time you read, hopefully, the person getting read will walk away with something. It isn't in your power to make sure they get it, but it's in your power to make sure you're as honest and clear as possible. Whether you're a professional reader or just do it on the side for friends, the advice is the same. Reading for someone is a sacred act and should be done with honor to them, yourself and the process.
Sometimes people come to a reading with such expectations that it's impossible for it to be a good experience. They're responsible for what they choose to bring to a reading and for what they receive. You're only responsible for keeping yourself clear to deliver the message as best as possible, not the message or how the message is received.
No matter what happens in a reading, you can always walk away a better reader. Each experience gives its own lessons. Each time you reach up and touch the light is one more time you have been touched by the light. It's an exercise; each time makes you stronger, wiser.
I believe that a reader should go into the reading with an attitude of se rvice. Not se rving the person being read, rather serving the highe r purpose: you are bring ing forth information that is to be used with love and light for the highest good. you remember this, you're more likely to have successful readings, happy clients and, at the end of the day, feel more purposeful.
I know that reading can sometimes be draining; when the reading shts and becomes draining, try to remember why you're there. When the draining sensation begins it's usually because of an emotional imbalance; strengthen your shield, align and balance your chakras, remove your expectations. Check to make sure that you haven't taken on your client's fear. Your job is only to be open and honest; you're not there to channel or process the client's frustration, anger and fear. you're channeling the client's frustration anger and fear, acknowledge it. Thank it for its communication and then release it.
A good way to start a reading for a client is pretty much the same way you start a reading when you're by yourself or in a small group. you're not already grounded and shielded, just take a second and do so. Then, take a deep breath, relax, say your intentions and prayers silently or out loud and just start.
When I first started reading, I used to have a terrible time getting started. I would look at them, and they would be staring back at me. I would be looking at them; they would be looking at me—very, very awkward. And my mind would run a hundred miles an hour. Eventually, I would say my disclaimer, something like, "Well, I don't know where to start, so I will just start talking. Don't pay any attention to me I just stop and stare off into space. I'm just trying to gather information and digest it, so I can describe it." About this time, I would look them in the eye to acknowledge them. Then, I would have to look off at absolutely nothing. Then, I would just start talking about what I was getting.
I am a multi-tasker, and as soon as I was done giving my disclaimer, I had to talk faster to get caught up with the impressions I had received when I was giving my disclaimer. However, the one thing I noticed is that in the beginning, I could sit and stare at a client for an hour and receive nothing; but as soon as I started talking, everything started flowing. Every reader is dferent, and your style will often change over time. But in the beginning, you get started by starting.
My style, of course, has changed drastically since then. Now, I just have them take a deep breath, and I read their exhale. I often get impressions when they first call or from an initial email inquiry. Now I even get messages days before a person shows up, I've had spirits show up give me messages, and then a few days later, their person contacts me.
Once, I was walking through my living room and stopped because there was a spirit energy mass up against the wall. I had grown accustomed to this, so I just asked what they were doing and what they wanted. It took me a minute to collect myself, and the communication was weak, so I was trying to figure out I was actually having communication or I was just talking to myself. I didn't understand who the communication was for, because the spirit told me that she had lost her baby, and that sometimes we lose a child during pregnancy to teach us an incredible lesson of loss. The baby was safe on the other side and was never meant to be born, just came here to teach the lesson of loss.
Not really knowing what to do about the message that clearly wasn't for me, I shared it on my radio show that evening. The following Tuesday, I had a lady at my meditation meeting who burst into tears over the message that I had relayed to my listeners the previous Sunday. Although the message seemed to touch and help her, I didn't think it was for her. About a week later I received an email from a woma n, for whom I had read a few months previously. She had recently lo st her child during pregnancy, and although it had been a very, very hard thing for her to cope with, she wanted me to know that she still listened to the tape of the reading. I had told her during the reading that something unwanted may happen with the pregnancy. The way I had phrased it, now gave her comfort. I of course relayed the same message that I gave during my radio show.
Sometimes we are a medium for someone specic and other times, as our gift grows, we become a message center. It was touching how this lady 's Guide gave me one message, and it ended up helping two people going through the same situation.
