9 out of 10 mediums prefer cooking scents to stale cigarettes! Clairalience, clear smelling, and clairambience, clear tasting, are two very fascinating occurrences in spirit communication. Smell is one of the strongest of all the senses; to this day, I smell Casa Blanca Lilies, an entire movie of my friend's, Gerald, dying plays out in my head, something that was 10 years ago. Not only does it play out, emotionally I'm right there again, feeling the feelings I did 10 years ago. As you can imagine, scents as well as taste can be used to convey large amounts of information very quickly.
One of the first big spirit circles I held at my house, I used clairalience to start the evening. At the beginning of the circle, I asked that there were any spirits present to please send a pleasant fragrance to let their presence be known. Then, I asked everyone to smell for the scent; I opened my eyes and saw everyone smiling to themselves. We then identied it. We had all identied the scent silently before we started discussing it. This was a very powerful confirmation that we weren't making it up. There were two scents intertwined, geranium and rose. I believe the rose-geranium was from my grandmother Rose.
Scent is very closely linked to taste, so when you get one, you often get the other. I used to read for a woman, and whenever her mother would come through, you could always smell cigarettes. She would laugh and say, "Y eah, that's mom's calling card. " Turn's out, Mom was a big smoker and also a great cook! Whenever her mother wanted to come through and get their attention at home, she would either perfume the house with cigarette or cooking smells. This young lady's husband hated the smell of cigarettes, so whenever she would start, he would scream out, "You better start cooking Ma, because I hate the smell of cigs." Mouth-watering recipes would loft through the air that you could literally taste. Unfortunately you couldn't eat.
As you can see scents and tastes can be used to communicate complex memories and cause the medium to recall events or feelings with little effort. They can also be sent to strengthen a bond between mother and daughter letting the daughter know that even though mom has passed she is still feeding 'or nurturing' her from the other side.
I think smell and taste is used more often as a calling card for identying the spirit. Once you have associated a smell with a spirit, then when you smell it, you can get straight to the message, saving valuable time and energy.
I almost don't want to mention this… I just have too. I used to do readings in a Vegas bookshop. There was this ghost, Smelly Feet, that everyone knew, but no one spoke about. He smelled like a cross between smelly feet and flatulence. We never talked about Smelly Feet because no one wanted him to come around; talking about him just sort of brought him into action. I found out about him one day when another psychic and I were sitting quietly in my room reading each other and swapping le stories. Then this terrible odor appeared; at first she blamed me, then, started laughing. That's when I got the story about Smelly Feet. A week or so later the manager pulled me to the side and gave me the low down on Smelly Feet. He's completely harmless and no one had been able to banish or exercise him, I decided not to attempt an exorcism out of fear he would follow me home and stink up the place.
