Developing and honing the giftt of mediumship is very rewarding. There are wonderful supportive energetic influences all around us. Developing the intuitive aspect of the self and being able to tap into wise and consoling council is the biggest reason I can think of for studying mediumship.
Talking to spirit isn't just to talk to the dead, think of Spirit Guides, Angels, and the Ancestors not to mention many forms of deities and beings of light. Whether your goal is to be able to clear a house of trapped souls or to simply commune with Ganesha, it's all good. The development of mediumship will put you in touch with your own innate guidance as well as in touch with guidance from the spirit plane.
I once heard a woman say that GUIDANCE was actually an acronym, which stood for ‘God' ‘U', and ‘ I ' ‘ Dance ' . I don 't believe in a monolithic god, but in the context of a 'unying divine energy' or a Master Guides this makes perfect sense to me. Think of the possibilities to have this dance as a constant. In your day to day activities being in constant contact with Master Guides, Angels, Teachers, or the Ancestors.
You need to know that your connection with spirit isn't sporadic, it's constant. Literally you're always in constant contact because you are spirit, and spirit is always connected to spirit. You're already connected. Developing your ability to be in constant contact with guidance is just freeing yourself of your blocks so you can reference this connection that's already there.
My guides inform me the reason many people do not posses stronger mediumship abilities is because they've not brought their own understanding of their self to a sufficient level. The first step is to develop this contact with our own spirit and to dance free in our own heart. When we can do this, we can easily dance with the spirit of others. It would be counter productive to allow someone to get lost in another spirits individuality or consciousness. We must first know our own. I can attests to this, the freer I have allowed myself to dance in my own heart the better my mediumship abilities have gotten.
When we become aligned with the spirit inside of ourselves, it becomes easier to find it in others. When we're able to see ourselves in others, and others in us, then we can truly see the oneness of Spirit that is in all things. It's your spirit that gives you the ability to see the spirit that has crossed over. It's also your spirit that gives you the ability to speak with your angels and guides. So in order to develop spiritual communication one will need to be willing to accept ones own spiritual self on a conscious level.
Many people who read this book will have huge jumps in spirit communication abilities. It will feel like a cosmic permission parallel to the Monopoly's Chance Card "advance to Go and collect two hundred dollars." For others it will be frustrating because instead of getting your ancestors you may repeatedly get your Master Guide giving you a simple message of self love. This doesn 't mean that you haven't done enormous work on yourself; it only means that right this minute what's best for your highest good is that you continue the self work.
It isn't a contest, others have more success than you, it doesn't mean they're more spiritual than you or that they're a better medium. It only means they got an outcome that they wanted or expected. They're in a dferent time of their development, and their outcome wouldn't hinder their growth.
Try to have intention rather than ‘expectations' or ‘wants of a specic outcome'. When I go to an amusement park I have the intention of riding a great coaster but I get there and the ride is closed. I have some choices, I can enjoy the other aspects of the park or I can go home. The intention to ride the coaster gets me to the park but it's my acceptance that allows me to stay and have a great time. Accepting where you are in your development is going to make growth more enjoyable.
